Who viewed my Instagram story? How the viewers list works
Updated · 2 min read
Instagram shows you who watched your story. What fewer people know is how long that list stays visible and who never shows up on it at all.
This article explains how the viewers list works, and keeps what Instagram clearly documents separate from what it doesn't.
How to see who viewed your story
- 1Open the Instagram app and tap your profile picture at the top left to open your own story.
- 2While the story is open, tap the viewer count at the bottom of the screen, or swipe up.
- 3The list of accounts that watched the story opens. If you posted several stories, each one has its own list.
How long can you see who viewed your story?
While the story is live for 24 hours, you can always see the list.
What happens after it expires is less clear. Many sources say the list stays visible in your Archive for up to about 48 hours after posting. But Instagram doesn't clearly document this, and the rules change from time to time. If you want to be sure, check the list while the story is still live.
Who doesn't show up on the list
People who watch without logging in
The list is made of the Instagram accounts that opened the story. If someone watches it with a browser tool that doesn't use an account, there's no name to add.
Accounts that blocked you
Some sources say an account that blocks you later can be removed from the list. Instagram doesn't explain this in detail either.
Visitors without an account
Instagram doesn't show stories to logged-out visitors, so they can't open your story in the app or on the website anyway.
Why is the list in that order?
Instagram doesn't officially explain how the viewers list is sorted. Claims that the people at the top are the ones who check your profile most have nothing to back them up.
"Who viewed my profile" apps
Instagram doesn't share who visits your profile with anyone. Apps that claim to show it are either guessing or asking for your password. Never give your password to apps like that.

FAQ
Can I see who viewed my story after 24 hours?
For a while. Many sources say about 48 hours after posting, but Instagram doesn't clearly document it. The safest way is to check the list while the story is live.
Can someone watch my story secretly?
Yes. If your account is public, your stories can be opened without an Instagram account, and those viewers don't appear on the list. If you don't want that, make your account private.
Is the first person on the viewers list my biggest fan?
There's no way to know. Instagram doesn't explain how the list is sorted.
