Why can't I see someone's Instagram story?
Updated · 2 min read
You know someone posted a story, but you can't see it. There are several possible reasons, and most of the time it doesn't mean you've been blocked.
Here are the most common reasons and how to tell them apart.
The 8 most common reasons
1. The story expired
Stories disappear after 24 hours. Unless it was added to a highlight, it's gone.
2. The account didn't post a story
If there's no colored ring around the profile picture, there's no active story right now.
3. The account is private and you don't follow it
Only approved followers can see stories from private accounts. Until your follow request is accepted, the stories won't open.
4. The story is for Close Friends
Stories with a green ring are only visible to people on the owner's Close Friends list.
5. The story is hidden from you
Instagram has a "Hide story from" setting. You can still see the profile and posts, but not the stories. That's the owner's choice.
6. You've been blocked
If you're blocked, the profile usually looks empty, and posts and follower details don't load.
7. The account was deactivated or renamed
If the account was deactivated or the username changed, the old link or username won't work.
8. An app or connection problem
Update the app, check your internet connection and restart the app. Sometimes stories just load late.
How to tell which one it is
Start with the profile. If you can see posts but there's no story ring, there's most likely no active story. If the ring is green, the story is for Close Friends.
If the profile is completely empty and you can't find the account in search, it may be deactivated, or it may have blocked you. There's no way to know for sure, and respecting the person's choice is better than guessing.
Checking a public account's story
If you want to know whether a public account posted a story in the last 24 hours, you can type the username into our tool. It only shows current stories from public accounts. It can't show private accounts or Close Friends stories.

FAQ
If I can't see a story, am I blocked?
Not necessarily. The most common reasons are that the story expired, the account is private, or the story was for Close Friends.
What does a green ring mean?
A green ring means the story is only visible to people on the owner's Close Friends list.
Is there a way to see a private account's story?
The only way is to send a follow request and have it accepted. Don't trust sites or apps that claim to show private stories.
